BARALACHA LA

Altitude: 4850 Metres

Location: On the Leh–Manali Highway, connecting Lahaul in Himachal Pradesh with Ladakh

Nearby attractions: Suraj Tal, Deepak Tal, Zingzing Bar, Bhaga River

It is an 8 kilometer long pass located in the Zanskar Mountain range near the Bhaga River. Baralacha Pass is known for extreme weather conditions and remains accessible from May to Early October only depending on snowfall conditions. The name Baralacha means- a pass with crosswords which is significantly true as it is not a confluence of just roads for rivers and trails too. Surrounded by three mountain ranges- the Zanskar, The Great Himalayas and Pir Panjal, it is the foremost choice for tourists in Ladakh to ride and witness extraordinary 360-degree view of snow-streaked ridges and deep valleys. This pass of Ladakh turns more beautiful when the snow melts and a turquoise stream originates from deep layers of snow, painting a beautiful picture of the valley. Heaven for bird watchers, this Pass acts as a pit stop for trekkers commencing to Chandra Tal and Suraj Tal.


KHARDUNG LA

Altitude: 5,602 M (5359 Metres)

Location: 39 Km North to Leh

Known as the World’s highest Mountain Pass a few times ago, Khardung La is the most iconic and famous mountain pass in Ladakh. It is a Gateway to the Nubra and Shyok Valleys and holds an important place in the hearts of adventurers and Motorbike riders. A valley flooded with prayer flags and stretched views feels like a threshold between earth and sky. Frozen wind, and crisp air lead to a haunted silence echoing great noise of thunder in your heart while crossing blends of this pass. On a clear day and the best weather, the pass offers a gigantic view of Leh Town on one side while the mystical sand dunes of Nubra on the other. Clicking a pic at the top with a signboard marked with its treacherous height and enjoying a sip of coffee or Maggi at a small army café mark the accomplishment. March to May and September to October are the best time to visit here. Before reaching here, you must acclimatize to high altitude due to low oxygen and air pressure.


LACHUNG LA

Altitude: 5,059 Metres

Location: Ladakh- Between Pang and Tanglang La on the Leh–Manali Highway, 54 Km from Sarchu

Nearby attractions: Tanglang La, Pang, Gata Loops, Tsokar Lake, Nakee La

The pass can be defined as- Just you, the wind and endless Sky. Stand erect at majestic height of more than 5000 Metres, Lachung La is an offbeat mountain pass with spectacular beauty and wide-angle mountain views. Lachung means small, but this pass will give you a true feel of vastness of raw beauty of region. Stark and surreal landscape with loose gravel, jagged ridgelines surprise visitors with its occasional snow flurries in summer. Best time to visit Lachung la Pass is from May to Mid-October, but needs proper preparation to acclimatization for this challenging high-altitude route. To reach this pass, route passes through Nakee La- another pass at great height of 15,547 feet.


FOTU LA

Altitude: 4,108 M

Location: On NH1D (Srinagar–Leh Highway), between Kargil and Leh

Nearby attractions: Lamayuru Monastery, Namika La, Mulbek Chamba Statue, Wakha Valley

Fotu La is the highest point on the Srinagar-Leh Highway and is easily accessible compared to Himalayan giants such as Khardung La or Umling La passes. The Landscape is a mix of rolling hill slopes, arid and golden-brown hills and deep gorges. Part of the lower Trans Himalayan rides, it is famous among adventure riders for smooth driving, ease of accessibility and scenic views. Highlights of Fotu La Tour are dramatic light contrasts on mountain rocks glowing in hues of Ochre, rust and gold around Sunrise and Sunset. Situated between Wakha Valley and Lamayuru, its calm ambience and road quality set it apart from others. Get cinematic views of the Indian Himalayas with a slow drive across passes with windows down. With a low altitude and moderate climate, Fotu La remains open year-round except December to March due to heavy snowfall. Srinagar to Leh is the best route to access this pass with an en-route stop at Namika La.
